Outstanding Versatile Hunters and Devoted Family Dogs

The Picardy Spaniel (Epagneul Picard) originated in France about ~250 years ago.  Much to the surprise of most North Americans, the Picardy Spaniel is a pointing dog, not a flushing dog.  There are only ~2,300 Picardy Spaniels worldwide, of which ~280 reside in North America.  In spite of being relatively rare, the Picardy Spaniel is a healthy, long-lived breed with no serious health issues.  Picardy’s are athletic dogs that thrive with exercise and time afield.  More often than not the Picardy is a big-boned dog with a sturdy body, a wide, oval-shaped head, and a deep/wide chest.

The Picardy Spaniel is an intelligent, even-keeled family dog that loves to hunt.  They are a true versatile breed that excels at hunting many species of game, be it feathered or furred.  In Europe the Picardy is used to hunt upland game, waterfowl, hare, fox, deer and wild boar.  Born with phenomenal prey drive and a strong desire to hunt their athletic nature affords them excellent endurance afield.  Not many versatile hunting dogs have a “off switch,” but the Picardy Spaniel does.  They’re just as happy hanging out on the couch as they are when they’re out hunting, running or playing.
